CIVILIAN was approached by Bankston Architectural, an Australian door hardware manufacturer, to design a 10-piece range. Inspired by the typographic sculptures of Takenobu Igarashi and the interwar period of design, when pre-industrial craft traditions overlapped with industrial mass-production techniques, the collection uses the half dome shape in multiple materials to elaborate multiple door hardware forms. This modular approach - using polished chrome, satin nickel, bone finishes with American Walnut and Petoro Gold marble - will allow consumers to customize the range. The two-year collaboration culminated in Bankston’s entry into the US market during NYCxDesign 2024 with an off-site event presentation designed by CIVILIAN.
The Hemispheres collection harnesses the power of collaborative design alongside sustainably-sourced materials and ethically-sourced manufacturing partners to energize a moribund consumer category. While typically associated with engineering and locksmithery, the collection seeks to elevate door hardware to the same plane as lighting and furniture design.
